Specimen Requirements

Collect: One 4 mL gray top tube on ice

Pediatric: One grey top microtainer on ice

Stability: Unstable, transport to lab ASAP

Ambient: Unstable

Refrigerated: 14 days

Frozen: 1 month

Collection Remarks: Sample should be immediately placed on ice after collection.

 

Reject Due To: Specimens not received on ice and/or with gross hemolysis.

Test Includes: 

  1. When "Lactic Acid with Reflex" (LAB1237164) is ordered, a baseline lactic acid level will be measured.
  2. If the baseline lactic acid is ≥ 2.0 mmol/L, a follow-up lactic acid test will be automatically ordered, with a collect time 2 hours in the future.
  3. If the baseline lactic acid is < 2.0 mmol/L, no reflexive follow-up test will be ordered. Any additional testing would be ordered by the care team.
